Cruising the Douro River

The river has been at the heart of the city since its founding, and the lifeblood of the development at its peak times and today again it is where the best parts of the city are to be found. So what better to explore the real feel of Porto, both historic and today, than by cruising the river itself.

While Porto itself is at the mouth of the river it continues for almost 900km into the interior of the country and goes all the way to the border in the mountains with Spain to the east.

Viking Cruises operate a Porto - Pinhao - Porto route which is a 10 day cruise stopping at all the major locations and enjoying much quiet time simply enjoying the river.  Covering both Portuguese and Spanish sights this is a very well reviewed cruise and details can be found on their site. website

As well as longer multi day cruises on well equiped cruise boats there are also short trips to be enjoyed within just the city area itself.

Viator arranges day cruises on the Douro, you can find more about them on their website.
